Day 26 of Lent: Healing Through Tears and Surrender

Reflection

The road to Calvary grows steeper.

The weight of the cross presses deeper into Jesus’ wounded body. The path is rough, uneven, and filled with obstacles. Already weakened, He is shoved, struck, and forced forward without mercy.

Near the gate, He is pushed into a muddy pool.

The cross shifts.

And Jesus falls again—this time into the dirt and filth.

He rises, only to continue on the narrow, stony road… and again, His strength begins to fail. The weight, the pain, the exhaustion—all too much.

Another fall threatens.

But this time, Simon of Cyrene catches Him, holding Him up before He collapses completely.

Even in this moment, Jesus continues forward.

Then, something unexpected happens.

A group of women—known as the Daughters of Jerusalem—begin to weep loudly at the sight of His suffering. Their hearts are moved with compassion.

Jesus turns to them.

In the midst of His own agony, He speaks not about His pain, but about theirs.

“Do not weep for me… weep for yourselves and for your children.”

Even here—broken, exhausted, and wounded—His heart is turned outward.

He sees beyond the moment.

He sees deeper than the suffering in front of Him.

He calls them to a deeper kind of healing.

There are moments in a standing journey when the weight feels unbearable.

Moments when you feel like you are falling again…

and again…

and again.

You may feel worn down by repeated disappointments, setbacks, or long seasons of waiting. You may feel like you are walking a path that is steep, exhausting, and filled with obstacles you did not choose.

Jesus understands this kind of suffering.

He did not fall just once.

He fell repeatedly.

And still—He continued forward.

But this moment also reveals something deeper:

Not all tears lead to healing.

The women wept for Jesus, but He gently redirected them—inviting them to look within, to allow God to transform their own hearts.

In the same way, God invites you beyond surface sorrow into deeper healing.

There is a grief that keeps us stuck…

and there is a grief that brings transformation.

Healing begins when we allow God to meet us in our pain—not just to comfort us, but to change us.

To soften what has hardened.

To heal what has been wounded.

To restore what feels lost.

And even when you feel like you cannot stand, God provides grace—sometimes through others, sometimes through quiet strength within—to hold you up.

Just as Simon helped steady Jesus, you are not meant to walk this road alone.

Reflection Questions

  • Where do I feel like I keep “falling” in my marriage journey?
  • What kind of grief am I carrying—does it lead me closer to God or keep me stuck?
  • How might Jesus be inviting me into deeper healing, not just surface comfort?

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You understand the weight of repeated falls and the pain of a difficult journey. When I feel weary and discouraged, help me to keep going. Teach me to bring my grief to You in a way that leads to healing and transformation. When I cannot stand on my own, provide the grace and support I need to continue. Heal my heart and guide me forward, one step at a time.

Amen.
