Day 23 of Lent: Healing When We Fall
Reflection
As Jesus carried the cross through the steep streets of Jerusalem, His strength was nearly gone.
His body was already broken from the scourging. His head throbbed from the crown of thorns. He had not slept, eaten, or drunk since the night before.
The cross pressed heavily against His wounded shoulders.
When He reached a steep part of the road, His strength finally gave way.
Jesus collapsed.
He fell hard against a large stone in the middle of the road, and the cross crashed down beside Him. Exhausted and unable to move, He lay in the mud while the soldiers shouted and struck Him.
For a moment, the entire procession stopped.
Jesus stretched out His hand as if asking for help. Instead, the soldiers mocked Him and beat Him, impatient for Him to rise.
Yet even in that moment of complete exhaustion, Jesus did something extraordinary.
He prayed for those who were hurting Him.
Finally, strengthened from above, He lifted His head and struggled to His feet again. The soldiers cruelly pressed the crown of thorns back onto His head and forced the cross once more onto His shoulders.
And Jesus continued the journey.
The first fall of Jesus reminds us of a truth many of us know deeply:
Sometimes the weight of suffering causes us to fall.
Standing for the healing of a marriage can bring seasons of discouragement, exhaustion, and grief. There may be days when your strength feels completely gone—when prayer feels heavy, hope feels distant, and your heart feels overwhelmed.
You may feel like you have fallen.
But Jesus fell too.
The fall of Christ shows us that falling does not mean failure.
Falling is part of the journey.
What matters most is that Jesus rose again and continued forward. Even while wounded, even while mocked, even while exhausted—He stood up and kept walking toward redemption.
The same grace is available to you.
God does not expect perfection. He meets you in your weakness. When your strength runs out, His strength begins.
Sometimes healing begins not when we stand strong, but when we allow God to lift us up after we fall.
Reflection Questions
- In what ways do I feel weary or discouraged in my marriage journey right now?
- When I feel like I have “fallen,” how do I usually respond—do I turn toward God or away from Him?
- Where have I experienced God lifting me up in difficult moments before?
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You fell beneath the weight of the cross, yet You rose again to continue the journey of love. When I feel overwhelmed or discouraged, remind me that You understand my weakness. Lift me when I fall and give me the strength to continue walking with You. Bring healing to my heart and to my marriage, and help me trust that Your grace is enough for each step.
Amen.
Lenten Healing Truth
Falling does not end the journey—God’s grace helps us rise and continue forward.
