Day 18 of Lent: Healing When We Are Misunderstood
Reflection
Jesus was brought before Herod, the tetrarch who had long been curious about Him. Herod had heard many stories—about miracles, crowds, and a kingdom not of this world. He had waited eagerly for the moment when Jesus would stand before him.
Now that moment had come. But Jesus did not speak.
Herod questioned Him endlessly, asking Him to defend Himself, to explain His identity, to perform a miracle. The priests shouted accusations, and the soldiers mocked Him. Yet through it all, Jesus remained silent.
Why?
Because Herod did not truly seek truth. He sought entertainment, spectacle, and confirmation of his own pride. His heart was closed.
Jesus knew that words spoken to a hardened heart would not bring healing. So He remained silent.
This moment can feel painfully familiar.
In wounded marriages, there are seasons when accusations fly, misunderstandings multiply, and hearts grow defensive. You may feel the urge to explain yourself repeatedly, to prove your intentions, or to force someone to understand the love you are trying to give.
But sometimes healing does not come through winning the argument. Sometimes it comes through surrendering the moment to God.
Jesus shows us that silence can be a form of strength. His silence was not weakness—it was trust. He entrusted His reputation, His dignity, and even His suffering to the Father.
Meanwhile, the soldiers mocked Him mercilessly. They dressed Him in a white garment like a fool and laughed as they pushed and struck Him. Yet even in the midst of such humiliation, Jesus looked upon them with compassion. He endured their cruelty without hatred.
This is the mystery of divine love: Christ allowed Himself to be misunderstood so that we might be redeemed.
We often carry a similar cross. When standing for healing in marriage, others may misjudge your hope, question your patience, or misunderstand your faith. At times, even the one you love may not see the sacrifices you are making.
But Christ sees. Every silent prayer. Every restrained word. Every act of mercy offered when it is not returned.
These hidden sacrifices are not wasted. They are united with the suffering love of Christ, and through them God quietly works healing in hearts.
The world often demands immediate answers, immediate justice, immediate resolution.
But the healing work of God is deeper and slower. Sometimes love must simply endure.
Reflection Questions
- When I feel misunderstood, do I immediately try to defend myself, or do I bring the situation to God first?
- How does Christ’s quiet endurance challenge the way I respond to criticism or misunderstanding?
- What hidden sacrifices am I offering for the healing of my marriage during this season?
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You stood silently before Herod while accusations and mockery surrounded You. When I feel misunderstood or unfairly judged, help me to remain rooted in Your peace. Teach me when to speak and when to be silent. Unite my hidden sacrifices with Your suffering love, and use them to bring healing where it seems impossible. Strengthen my heart to trust that You see all things and that Your truth will prevail.
Amen.
Lenten Healing Truth
God sees the love you give even when others misunderstand it. No sacrifice offered with Christ is ever wasted.
