Day 12 of Lent: Healing When Darkness Gathers

Scripture Focus

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” -John 1:5

Reflection

The hall was ablaze with torches. The council seated in power. Witnesses arranged. Soldiers posted. The air thick with accusation.

Jesus stood in the center—alone.

False testimony swirled around Him like smoke. Words were twisted. Truth distorted. Love misrepresented as rebellion. Even those who once listened to Him now watched in fearful silence.

This scene feels painfully familiar.

There are seasons in a wounded marriage when darkness seems organized—when misunderstandings multiply, when motives are misread, when voices against you appear louder than truth itself. You may feel placed in the center of a circle you did not choose, silently enduring what you cannot control. Jesus knows this place.

He answered nothing at first. Blow after blow fell upon Him. Mockery increased when He remained silent. They demanded proof. They demanded spectacle. They demanded that He justify Himself.

But healing does not begin with frantic defense. It begins with rooted identity.

When finally adjured under oath, Jesus lifted His voice and declared who He was: “I am… and you shall see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power.”

In that moment, heaven opened.

Though the room raged, though hell trembled, though hatred intensified—light surrounded Him. His identity was not determined by their verdict. Their fury did not diminish His sonship.

When your marriage feels engulfed in chaos, you must remember who you are. You are not defined by the accusations spoken over your situation. You are not defined by another’s choices. You are not defined by delay. You are a daughter of the Living God. You stand in covenant not merely with a spouse—but under Christ.

Caiphas tore his garments in theatrical outrage. “He is guilty of death,” they cried. And yet, in truth, Life stood before them.

Sometimes the darkness grows loudest when light is nearest to breaking through.

The insults did not stop after the verdict. They crowned Him with thorns. Spat upon Him. Mocked His kingship. Bound His eyes and struck Him.

Still—He did not curse them. He prayed.

The more they tried to extinguish His light, the more it shone. A halo of divine dignity surrounded Him. They could not bear it.

Your quiet fidelity in suffering carries a light the enemy cannot tolerate. When you refuse bitterness… when you resist hatred… when you continue to love in truth… heaven sees.

Healing in marriage often requires walking through rooms of misunderstanding without losing your identity. It requires remembering that God’s verdict matters more than man’s.

You may feel surrounded tonight. But you are not abandoned. The same Light that shone around Christ in that tribunal surrounds you now.

Reflection Questions

  • Have I allowed accusations to shape how I see myself?
  • What truth about my identity in Christ do I need to reclaim today?
  • Am I reacting from fear—or standing from secure trust in God?

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You stood in the center of accusation and did not lose Yourself. You endured mockery and remained Light. You were condemned by men yet affirmed by the Father. When darkness gathers around my marriage, steady my heart. When lies swirl, anchor me in truth. When I am tempted to defend myself in anger, teach me holy restraint. Let Your light surround me. Let Your identity define me. Let healing begin in me first.

Amen.

Lenten Healing Truth

Darkness may gather, but it cannot extinguish the identity God has spoken over you.
