Day 24 of Lent: Healing Through Shared Burdens

Reflection

As Jesus continued the painful journey to Calvary, His strength was nearly gone. The weight of the cross, the loss of blood, and the exhaustion from the long night of suffering finally overcame Him. When He reached an archway along the road, He stumbled over a large stone and fell again to the ground.

The cross slipped from His shoulders.

This fall was different from the others. Jesus was so weak that He could not rise.

Some people passing by on their way to the Temple stopped in shock and compassion. “Look at that poor man,” they said. “He is dying.”

But the leaders and soldiers showed no mercy. Their only concern was that Jesus might die before reaching the place of execution.

So they searched the crowd for someone to help.

At that moment a man named Simon of Cyrene happened to be passing by with his children. He had been working in the fields and was simply returning home when the soldiers seized him and forced him to carry the cross.

At first Simon resisted. He did not want to be involved in the suffering of a condemned man.

But then Jesus looked at him.

Through blood, exhaustion, and tears, Christ lifted His eyes and met Simon’s gaze with a gentle and heavenly look.

Something changed in Simon’s heart.

The burden he had been forced to carry became something he willingly embraced. As he walked behind Jesus, helping bear the weight of the cross, grace began quietly working within him.

What began as an unwanted burden became the beginning of conversion.

We know what it feels like to carry a cross that we never asked for.

The pain of a struggling marriage, the uncertainty of the future, and the emotional weight of standing in faith can feel overwhelming at times.

Like Simon, you may have found yourself in a situation you never expected.

Yet this moment in the Passion reveals a powerful truth:

God often brings healing through shared burdens.

Simon did not remove the cross from Jesus, but he helped carry it.

In the same way, God often sends unexpected companions along our journey—friends who pray with us, communities who support us, and even moments of grace that strengthen our hearts.

Sometimes Christ also invites us to help carry His cross by loving when it is difficult, forgiving when it hurts, and remaining faithful when the path feels long.

And in that mysterious exchange, something beautiful happens.

As we help carry the cross of Christ, He carries us.

Simon began the journey reluctant and frustrated. Yet tradition tells us that his heart was deeply touched by grace, and his family later followed Christ.

The cross that interrupted his day became the doorway to transformation.

The same can be true for us.

Reflection Questions

  • What burdens in my marriage journey feel especially heavy right now?
  • Who has God placed in my life to help carry these burdens with me?
  • How might Christ be inviting me to walk more closely with Him in this season of Lent?

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You accepted help from Simon when the cross became too heavy to carry alone. Teach me to receive help with humility and to trust that You provide what I need along the journey. When the burdens of my marriage feel overwhelming, remind me that You walk beside me and that Your grace is always at work. Transform my suffering into something that draws me closer to You.

Amen.
